Forest Resource Economics and Policy
Research
My research program is grounded on economics and forestry principles. By the very nature of the forest resource it is inherently multidisciplinary. Here is a list of some of my current research efforts. Across topics, I use of econometrics to answer questions that can support the advancement of sustainability efforts.
Forest Conservation & Sustainable Management
Sustainable forest management is necessary to supply renewable materials and secure ecosystem services. Many forests around the world are threatened by deforestation and/or degradation as a result of population and market pressures, among other factors.
This research line investigates the use of policy tools such as payments for environmental services to promote forest conservation and sustainable forestry.
Wood Energy & Forest Sector Statistics
Forests are an important source of materials that can be used in the generation of energy. I am conducting research encompassing the entire wood-based energy system from the source (e.g. forestlands producing woody biomass) to energy users (e.g. energy plants, final consumers). I collaborate regularly with the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe.
Sustainable Forest Product
The sustainable use of forest products can advance a green economy and circularity goals. Forest stewardship standards have been adopted to promote sustainable management of water, soil and air resources while ensuring the welfare of forest-dependent communities. This research investigates the potential for forest products to advance sustainability goals, along the evolution and public perception of forest certification standards.
